Why Choose an All You Can Eat Buffet?

October 19th, 2009

Buffets are very common these days. In fact, buffets are one of the top choices for events such as small gatherings or reunions. All-you-can-eat buffets are very popular due to several of the following reasons.

Firstly, buffets offer a very good bargain and great value for money. For the price you’d normally pay for a regular meal, most buffets are priced at the similar affordable range. Think about it, when given a choice between western, Japanese and all-you-can-eat buffets, at the same price, which would you prefer? The clear choice would be buffet simply due to the quantity of food you could actually stuff into your stomach.

Secondly, get-together sessions are normally never short. There should be plenty of catching up to do right after the meal. When dining at regular restaurants, you’re usually expected to leave the place once you finish your food. However, at buffets, you’re normally given a larger time frame, say around 3 hours.

You should probably take around an hour and a half to finish up your food, and use the remaining time for chatting.

Thirdly, the wide selection of food offered at all-you-can-eat buffets certainly sounds fun. You’d be spoilt with the choice of food you can eat at the buffet. You could actually have everything on the menu, unlike at regular dine-ins where you’ll have to make up your mind the moment you’re given the menu.

With all the mentioned points, it’s no wonder that all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants are packed with people even on weekdays.

Patio Ice Chests

October 13th, 2009

Today more and more people are opting to purchase a patio ice chest made from wood rather than plastic or steel. The main reason for this is that they complement the other pieces of garden furniture that one owns so well.

However, although they look great it is important that you take proper care of yours if you want it to last for many years to come. Below we offer some tips that you may find useful in helping to keep your wooden patio ice chest looking as great as the day you first purchased it.

Tip 1 – After you have assembled the ice chest for your patio that you have purchased it is a good idea to apply a coating of teak or linseed oil to its surface. This will help to ensure that not only is the color of the wood when first purchased maintained.

Tip 2 – If you are intending to apply a coating of linseed or teak oil to the surface of your ice chest make sure that you redo this every 6 months. If you don’t then very quickly you will soon begin to see the color of the chest begin to fade.

Tip 3 – However, if you want to ensure that your patio ice chest is protected well from the elements especially if you intend to leave it outdoors all year round then you are far better off staining yours. It is a good idea to actually sand the unit down first as this will then allow the staining you are using to seep into the wood providing even better protection against the elements.

America’s Other Drinking Problem – Do You Know What it Is?

October 12th, 2009

Studies link an increase in Americans’ intake of sweetened drinks – especially soda pop and sports drinks – with an unhealthy increase in our body weight. These drinks are also linked to:

* Weak bones

* Tooth decay

* Increased desire for sugar (and in some cases, caffeine)

America’s other drinking problem…

Some experts call soda pop "liquid candy"-and call our intake habits "America’s other drinking problem."

* Every day for a typical 2-year-old, carbonated soda provides more added sugar than cookies, candies and ice cream combined.

* 56% of 8-year-olds drink soda every day.

* A third of teenage boys drink at least 3 cans every day.

* 60% of all public and private middle schools and high schools sell soda pop to students.

Ideas for change!

* Go with H2O. Carry water with you – and drink it all day long. Be sure to use a refillable bottle and go "green."

* Rethink mealtime drinks. Drink water at meals. Don’t give it any more thought, simple offer water at mealtimes.

* Make it special. If you drink it, save soda, lemonade, Kool-Aid, and bottled juices for special occasions – no more than once a week.

* Even better, drink fresh juice. If you drink bottled juices only drink 100% fruit and vegetable juice – but limit yourself to one small (4 to 6 ounces) glass or juice box a day. Bottled juices have been pasteurized for preservation and most of the nutrients are gone. Fresh juice that you make at home or buy at a juice bar is sweet, delicious, and loaded with living enzymes and nutrients!

* Keep plenty of fresh fruit on hand. If you keep delicious fresh fruit out and available you will snack on that and curb your sweet tooth. Eating a whole piece of fruit also gives your body fiber which has a variety of health benefits. You’ll get more nutrients, and feel more satisfied.

* Exercise caution. Go easy on the sports drinks – water is best for exercise. If you really feel like you want to balance those electrolytes, do it naturally. Hit your local health food store and buy a thai baby coconut. They will probably cut the top off for you and provide a straw. Voila! A natural choice that provides nutrients and health to the body!

Don’t get overwhelmed. If you set a good example and teach your children how to make healthy choices they will not fall into "America’s other drinking problem." There are many resources for family’s to help give healthy choices or at least better choices. I recommend the book "Naturally Sweet Recipes; Recipes Your Entire Family Will Love!" The recipes are simple and the sugar comes from natural sources. When you curb you cravings and your children’s cravings for sweets with fruits and other natural sweeteners, they won’t be tempted to fall into a "drinking problem." Teach them well and they will make good choices.

Losing Weight Eating Organic Foods

October 12th, 2009

Today it seems like everyone is looking for the weight loss secret, the so-called silver bullet, the one diet, pill or exercise that will help them drop lots of weight with very little effort. Whether it’s the water diet or the latest exercise craze, people just want to lose weight quickly. Dropping 20 pounds overnight is neither healthy nor realistic. However, there are weapons that can give you an edge in the weight loss battle. Drinking more water, getting a lot of rest, exercising with weights, doing cardio and eating an organic diet food are just a few of the many available ‘weapons’ you can use effectively to win the weight loss battle. Organic food, grown without pesticides, hormones, preservatives and other harmful chemicals, is designed to work naturally with your body and can help you lose your excess weight naturally.

When organic fruits or vegetables are compared to their traditional counterparts, the beneficial vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in the organic produce far exceed those of their traditional counterparts. In some cases, the amount of certain nutrients is as much as three times higher in organic fruits and vegetables than in their traditional counterparts. These high amounts of nutrients give you more energy, which helps you lose weight. If you are planning to eat organic diet food, for an even more effective weight loss plan, you might consider a juice fast just prior to starting an organic diet; however, juice fasts should only be done under the supervision of your nutritionist or doctor.

While proper amounts of nutrients and a lack of harmful chemicals in your body will keep your body functioning more efficiently, what does either of these facts have to do with weight loss? By digesting food quickly and efficiently, your metabolism increases and you maximize your food’s energy potential so you will be less fatigued and more prone to get up and move; in other words, you will have the energy you need to burn fat and calories while you build muscle. Studies have also found that people who eat organic diet food sleep better, which means you’ll be even more rested and better equipped to accomplish your weight loss goal.

When your body is working properly, you’re less likely to get sick. Staying healthy allows you to use the energy you would use to fight off infections to stay active and get into better shape. Dieters who feel healthy tend to stay on their diet. While switching to an organic diet is a great way to lose weight, you should also remember to eat the right organic diet. Try to eat fresh, unprocessed foods which are high in fiber as this will keep you feeling better and help you lose even more weight.

What Do You Know About Drinking Water Quality?

October 12th, 2009

Have you seen the television report that compared bottled water to drinking water? I know that when I saw that this report was coming out I had a hunch what the result was going to be from the report.

I remember sitting on my couch and watching the results as they said that bottled water is pretty much the same quality as drinking water that you get in your home. And some companies actually said that they get their water from the same source as the average home owner. They just package it and sell it for money.

What all that report means is that drinking water quality and bottled water quality are the same. I am better off taking a bottle and filling it up at home than spending money on the equivalent water from a store.

Living with an engineer has some advantages because the next question I asked was how good was water? If bottled water is virtually the same as drinking water, I would think that drinking water was implied to be of very good quality

So, I started looking into water quality in general and was surprised to find out that there are some nasty things that have been found in drinking water across the U.S. The Ralph Nader Research group presented a report that showed there were over 2,100 toxic cancer causing chemicals found in their findings.

They went on to list the top ones and they were things like lead, chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, and drugs. This was surprising to me because I always thought that the water treatment facilities were removing these kinds of things.

One thing that stuck out as interesting to me was that drugs are being found because our bodies do not metabolize the entire drug we ingest. People also are flushing outdated or unused drugs down the drain. If you want to learn more about water quality or water in general then check out my link below.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters For Home and Industrial Use

October 12th, 2009

RO purifiers, or reverse osmosis purifiers, are one of the most popular water filtration and purification methods. RO water purification systems work by using pressure to force water through a semi-permeable membrane, allowing the pure water through and blocking anything larger than a water molecule.

Reverse osmosis was first discovered in the 1940s and the systems have come a long way since then. Drinking water can contain harmful chemicals including radium, fluoride, chlorine and arsenic, all of which RO purifiers are able to remove. Studies have actually proven that RO filtration systems coupled with a variety of filtration systems including UV lighting can remove everything bad from the water including radiation and nuclear waste.

Pros and Cons of RO Water Purification Systems

If you are wondering which is the best RO water purifier for you, the first thing to think about is whether reverse osmosis water filtration is the best water purification process in your case. There are several disadvantages to an RO water filtration system.

First of all, herbicides, pesticides and chlorine are smaller than water molecules and will pass through an RO filter. You will need to use an additional carbon filter if you want to remove these. On the other hand, many RO systems come with a built in carbon filter. Secondly, reverse osmosis destroys the minerals found in water which give water its flavor and are good for your health. RO wastes a lot of the water passing through it.

Two or three gallons of water are used for every gallon of purified water produced when using an RO water purification system. RO is also a very slow process when compared to alternative water purification options.

The water collected will not contain any sugars, salts, ions or molecules larger than water molecules. The filtered water will not taste pleasant like carbon filtered water. However, RO water purification systems work well if you are just removing earth, silt or other large molecules from your water supply and RO purifiers require minimal maintenance.

Bacteria and disease-causing pathogens are larger molecules than water so these will be removed with an RO water purifier. The coliform bacteria, however, cannot be removed with RO. Reverse osmosis water purification is an ideal method of contaminant removal in areas without a municipal water sources or areas at risk from waterborne diseases. Using a reverse osmosis drinking water system can also help you to achieve better health in the long run.

Before You Decide on RO Purification

It is important to have your water tested before deciding to buy an RO water purifier. The water test will tell you about the minerals and bacteria present in your water supply and these results will tell you whether RO purification is the best way to treat your water. Also, you need to think about the intended water use, for example drinking only, cooking and drinking, all household uses etc, before choosing a water filtration system.

Depending on the water test results, you might discover that reverse osmosis is the best water treatment option for your household. Adding chemicals to water or boiling it do not make the water pure but RO can filter out bacteria, chemicals and other impurities. A lot of RO systems come with carbon filters, meaning they are able to remove more chemicals and toxic waste and provide you with safe, clean drinking water.

How to Buy Caviar

October 12th, 2009

If you’re searching for a great addition to your dinner party menu plan or you just want to try something new, caviar is definitely the way to go. However, purchasing it for the first time can be a little intimidating, especially for those who have never tried it before. It’s often considered to be a high end luxury food item, reserved mostly for the rich and famous, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoy it too. There are a few things you should keep in mind when making your first purchase, but don’t be nervous. Whether you’re buying online or in a gourmet food store, you shouldn’t hesitate to ask lots of questions.

Before making your first purchase, you should be aware that there are many, many types of caviar. The three most popular and most flavorful types are Beluga, Osetra and Sevruga. Beluga is definitely the most expensive and well known of the three because it is also rarest and the largest. The roe (eggs) range from gray to black in color. Osetra is also large and ranges in color from yellowish gray to dark brown. And Sevruga is medium sized and ranges from gray to black in color. You can tell these three apart by the container they are in. Beluga should always be in a blue tin, Osetra should be in a yellow tin and Sevruga should be in a red tin. If your retailer you are purchasing from says otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend buying the caviar, as you may be taken advantage of.

Not to scare you off from caviar all together, but the price range can be a bit extravagant. Beluga caviar hovers around $150 per ounce, Osetra ranges from around $90 to $140 per ounce and Sevruga ranges from around $95 to $125 per ounce. So just be prepared to spend rather large amount on your first purchase, but the taste is worth it. Just make sure to buy only as much as you are planning to serve or eat within a short period of time because caviar has a relatively short shelf life. It’ll only last about three to four weeks total unopened and then three days after it’s been opened, if you are able to store it properly at 30 degrees F.

When choosing a place to purchase your caviar, don’t go to just any old supermarket. You should be either going online to a caviar retailer or finding a gourmet food store that specializes in caviar. Once you’ve chosen your retailer, try to sample the product before buying. Most retailers will let you do this, although this obviously isn’t a possibility when purchasing online. And finally, look for the word ‘Malossol’ on the tin. This means that the caviar is lightly salted and it’s also an indicator of good quality.

Good luck in your search and I’m sure you will be a caviar connoisseur in no time!

How Does Flavor Get Added to Your Beverages?

October 12th, 2009

Restaurant, beverage bottlers and convenience stores are all familiar with the syrups mixtures used to make great tasting beverages. Basically syrups are a simple of water, sweeteners, acidulates and, of course, flavor (other flavor enhancers, and even vitamins or minerals are added). Now lets look into what really gives your favorite drink its delicious flavor.

Emulsion or Extract, Whats the Difference?

Extracts and emulsions are two forms of flavor. Both of these dispersions share the same process which are intended to solve the issue of how to combine the oils derived from plants or chemicals while keeping the flavor intact in water which is essential in making a liquid that will be turned into a beverage. To help us understand the process better, lets compare it to a sliced lemon. If you squeeze a lemon peel small beads of oily liquid will show on the surface of the peel. These tiny oil beads hold the concentrated flavor of the lemon. This oil concentrate can be used to add flavor to any substance but since oil and water don’t mix we need to find a way to make the process happen. This dispersion process results in either an extract or emulsion.

Extracts are produced utilizing an ethyl alcohol solution mixed with the flavoring oil. The best way to make flavoring oils soluble with ethyl alcohol is with a mixture of flavoring oil and 50% ethyl alcohol which is then left to sit for about 7 days. During the 7 day waiting period the soluble parts slowly separate from the insoluble parts, after which the insoluble parts are the filtered and removed. This gives the flavoring extract a clear and almost transparent appearance. Extracts have a stable composition thus it has a long shelf life.

Emulsions make use of the process called homogenization to make the flavoring oil soluble . The homogenization process forces the flavoring oils to disperse onto an emulsifying agent like vegetable gum. An emulsion is a suspension of oil on a water soluble medium that basically minimizes the separation of the oil from the water. Emulsions, although equally stable has a shorter shelf life. An emulsions cloudy appearance distinguishes it from an extract.

Which Dispersion is the Better Choice?

After learning all about extracts and emulsions you probably wonder which one will suit your beverage best. The deciding factor is really simple, your beverages appearance. Since an extract is clear it will be the ideal choice for a clear beverage such as a lime soda. Emulsions on the other hand are best for colas and other colored drinks. No matter which one you choose, emulsions and extracts are essential to syrups and indispensable to making great tasting drinks.
