How to Fully Appreciate Video Games

October 19th, 2009

We love video games but we feel that a lot of people we meet just don’t know enough about them or take the time to fully appreciate them. Why not, we wondered? For some people, it’s not that they don’t want to but that they really don’t know how.

There are many people today who will even consider video games to be a work of art. There is a great deal of talent and sill that must go into creating a successful, popular video game and it’s important that as a player, you learn to fully appreciate each and every one.

Some gamers rush through a game or a review of a game waiting for the good stuff, fast action scenes or exciting levels and give very little attention to the other details that make up the game. Other gamers rely on the word and opinions of reviews and people they play with to help them make decisions regarding which games they play. When you learn to appreciate video games, you can be your own critic and make your own choices about what you play and why. You may find you are pleasantly surprised by some of the games you discover.

It’s also encouraged that you try new games or new genres that you may not normally play. Even if you don’t end up finding a new favorite game, it’s important to appreciate all that the video gaming community has to offer.

Here are some more types to help you fully appreciate video games:

-Watch the intro scenes. -Watch the cut scenes. -Listen to the music/soundtrack of the game. – Listen to the sound effects in the game. -Share the game with someone else or share your experience with the game with a friend or on a forum. – Take time to research the history of the game- who created it, why and who it was intended for. -Take time to look up hints and tips for the game you are playing. -Look up useful advice regarding the game you are playing. Find out what others are saying about it and how to play it. -Don’t make a biased decision based on first impressions. Give it some time first before forming an opinion. – Don’t avoid a game based only on the opinions and reviews of others. Take time to try it out for yourself.

With these tips, you can learn more about each and every game you play. Even if you try the game only to find you don’t like playing it often, you will still know that you have given it a full chance. When you learn to fully appreciate video games, you will be better able to enjoy the games you do play and to understand the industry as a whole. You will find a new love of video games because you will fully appreciate all that encompasses them.

3D Game Development – The Next Generation Game Development

October 19th, 2009

Advancement in technology has changed the way we look into the game development. Previously game were developed taking in account the skills of developers but now a days it has been put into the hands of user i.e. now user’s interest are taken into account. Technology has revolutionized the way we look on the games. Users’ wants to be a part of game i.e. they want get involved in the game as if they are a part of it.

This curiousness of end users lead to the development of highly sophisticated games that take care of the expectations of users and here we come up with 3d game development. The gaming industry has completely transformed the technology which was used previously. The advance technology in game development has made it possible to play with people from all across the world.

3D Model Designing made it possible to develop a proportional and perfect character which is the main building block of any game. After the characters are approved they are implemented in game appropriate to the situation and theme. Use of 3d Modeling makes it perfect for computer, TV screen or digital model.

Designers now can express their ideas along with the expectations of users to deploy a perfect characterization of game. Modeling of new characters on the basis of new scenarios will help in developing more user friendly games. Some of the hi-tech games today are inspired by the 3D Modeling Architecture which put life in these games.

Gaming Technology is began to refine with every passing day. Designers are designing the games and developers are using them in many online game servers like electro servers and redfive servers.

In last a game’s popularity depend on the user’s perspective i.e. how well it has been used in the game itself. We hope that in coming days we will be able to play the games that we can cherish for a life time.

Aion Release Imminent

October 19th, 2009

I like many others enjoy playing MMO. But as with so many games unless new content is continually being added they soon become the same old grind.

Having played World of Warcraft since its launch even this game is starting to slowly loose its appeal, sad but true.

That’s why when I heard that there is to be a release of a new MMO to hit the market on the 25th September 2009, it sparked my interest, and it’s name is Aion.. For anyone out there who is not familiar with Aion it is set in the Fantasy world of Atriea.

Having looked at a couple of reviews this could be the game of 2009. Although there seems to be a lot of the usual things within Aion, the sort of traits you would expect to find in most MMO’s, like crafting, character customisation, titles, in game rewards, but Aion does promise to bring some new facets to the table, such as aerial combat. Can’t wait to give that a bash.

Now I can not claim how good this game is, as I have yet to give it a spin, but from the hype around its launch it could breathe some new life into the MMO market. Oh incidentally the graphics Aion look stunning

So if your looking for a change of online game and something a little different then give Aion Tower of Eternity a go.

So until the 25th guess I will just have to wait patiently. If you want more info take a look at Aion-Release some good info on what to expect.

To the skies we fight !!! Well on the 25th we will.

Video Game Tester Jobs – 7 Simple Steps Towards Getting Hired As a Video Game Tester

October 15th, 2009

Video Game tester jobs are highly sought after by those of us who love playing video games. What gamer wouldn’t love to play and test games for a living? But if you have never worked in the video game industry, landing your first game testing job can seem a bit intimidating. What skills are needed? Where does one apply? What should be put on one’s resume? What about interview preparation? Don’t fret – we all have to start somewhere, and if you are determined to start a video game tester career, there is a simple, yet highly successful process that anyone can use to make it happen.

By following this 7 step process, you will land your first game testing job. This process is what we have discovered to be the most bullet-proof method of landing your first game tester job, as well as for starting a career as a video game tester.

Getting Hired as a Video Game Tester in Seven Simple Steps

First, you simply must enjoy playing games. Many people think being a games tester would just be an easy job, but without a sincere passion for gaming, just showing up for a paycheck simply doesn’t work. If you don’t sincerely love playing video games, then when the time to ship the game draws close, and everyone is putting in long hours to find all those remaining bugs in the game being tested, you won’t be enjoying yourself.

Second, learn that video games are software, and should be tested as such. Learn how to test the game as software, not simply a game. Discovered bugs aren’t simply a problem with the game play; they are most likely code bugs in the software. Learn the fundamentals of software testing, and you will find a lot more bugs, and soon become the leading bug finder on your team. This will make you a rockstar game tester, and the jobs will come to you as your reputation as a video game tester grows.

Third, don’t limit yourself to testing only one gaming platform or company. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo are the big three, but if you limit yourself to only one of those, you limit the game tester jobs and opportunities that are available to you. Learn to use the PC as a gaming platform if you don’t already, and you will rapidly increase your video game tester job opportunities.

Fourth, acquire some game testing experience before building your resume. There are numerous video game beta tester opportunities that are free to apply for, and although they are unpaid, you will gain valuable experience.

Fifth, learn a few things about the video game industry. Having a basic understanding of what it takes to design, market and ship a game will impress potential employers to no end, and put you way ahead of the pack of ordinary game testers.

Sixth, determine which company or companies you would like to work for. Many jobs are on-site, meaning you will have to live or work where the actual company is, but many companies will hire people to test their games at home, on their own systems, so your geographic location doesn’t have to be an obstacle.

Seventh, after following the first 6 steps, it will be time to build your resume and cover letter. You will now be able to really showcase your passion for video games, as well as show your potential employer you know something about game testing. This will give you a significant advantage against other entry-level game testers, and insures you will be hired for your first video game tester job!

Jonathon Halston has been testing video games for a living for almost 12 years. After starting out doing contract video game tester gigs, he soon became a full-time Software Design Engineer in Test at a World Class Software Company, and still tests and plays games every chance he has. He is dedicated towards helping others get started in the career that has been so rewarding for him, and delights in seeing others achieve their dreams. The Seven Most Annoying Game Character Outfits

October 13th, 2009

7) Ness from Earthbound

When one thinks of a hero or protagonist, the image of a strong man or woman wearing a cool outfit made out of materials that provide protection against enemies during the long and arduous journey ahead; not in Ness’ case. When this guy sets out to save the world from an alien race, all he needs is a hat, striped shirt, backpack, and his trusty baseball bat. When it came out in the 1990s Earthbound on the SNES took the conventional hero image and turned it on its heels.

6) Super Mario

In some show about gaming I saw a while back, the developers at Nintendo decided to break the mold of the stereotypical hero. A small amount of memory limited how many pixels they could use to create Mario, so they put most of it in his nose and gut. An ugly plumber wearing red overalls and a cap was born, spawning a revolution in gaming. His outfit didn’t bother me until Super Mario RPG came out, which was a terrific game, but the selection of armor Mario could wear was limited to it having the word pants in it (work pants, heavy pants).

5) Zidane from Final Fantasy IX

I remember reading a video game magazine a few months before FF9 came out and being perplexed as to why the characters had large heads and long, monkey-like arms. I then soon realized that the people at Squaresoft were insane, but also probably trying to design very uniqe characters not seen in other games: they succeeded. Zidane looks like a cross between Meg Ryan, Prince, and Goku and his outfit looks to be some sort of British aristocracy/sailor suit. While I really enjoyed the game, I never got over why he looked so strange.

4) Max from Dark Cloud 2

Max is an inventor of sorts, and in the game can create monsters by using materials and taking pictures of bosses. It bothered me that his weapon of choice was a wrench, which seems like a weapon someone would pick up randomly if they thought their house was being broken into. Add an engineer cap and overalls and the picture is complete, Max belongs on a railroad and not in an RPG.

3) Tidus from Final Fantasy X

Overall, I didn’t like Tidus very much in general and FF10 didn’t feel like a genuine part of the Final Fantasy series, maybe because FF7 was too hard to top. One thing that really bothered me about Tidus is that he wears shorts, with one being longer than the other. Tidus seemed to start the trend of exposing as much chest and stomach as possible with half-shirts that would make him look like a fashion model from Zoolander, and does anyone else think he looks just like Marlene from Advent Children?

2) Albel Nox from Star Ocean: Till the End of Time

Albel is the first character I encountered in a game where I was unsure whether or not he was a man or a woman. With a man’s voice and man’s name, but the body shape and body language of a woman, it took a while for me to be sure it was a guy, and even then I was doubtful. Japanese games aren’t known for making masculine characters and their male characters often have soft, feminine features, but even then I can normally tell. A cut-off shirt, pany-hose looking leggings, and a skirt make Albel just a bit sexually ambiguous.

1) Vaan from Final Fantasy XII

I felt misled in the beginning of FF12 because you play as Vaan’s brother, who is a knight clad in a true set of armor, fitting for any hero. Unfortunately, he dies and you take control as his seemingly gay, street-rat brother, Vaan. Vaan looks pretty much like Tidus, except he is just wearing pants, a tiny vest and looks a lot more like a girl. It just doesn’t make sense to me why the people at Squaresoft are taking articles of clothing away after every game. I could really go on and on about how disturbed I am just looking at Vaan, so let me put it this way: there are men, there are women, and then there is Vaan.

Be a Beta Game Tester – Video Game Testing For Real Cash

October 13th, 2009

Being a beta game tester can be truly great, especially for someone whose life “revolves” around video games. Not only do you get to play some of the coolest new games before your friends and the rest of the world, you get PAID to do so!

How Much a Beta Game Tester is Paid

You can expect a starting wage of around $8-$10 per hour. As you work for more developers and get more experience, that amount will likely go up. Will it go up to $120 per hour as stated by those ads you’ve seen? Probably not, unfortunately. However, your “salary” can indeed reach the $25-$35 per hour mark when you become a fast beta game tester.

Another big thing to remember is that many game testing jobs are on a “per assignment” basis rather than hourly pay. That said, if the game testing assignment paid $400 and you were to complete it in about 8 hours time, you’d be making a whopping $50 per hour!

Generally speaking, the faster you are at beta game testing, the more money you’ll make. On the flip side, if your speed comes at the price of quality, then it does you NO good.

Be Ready to Work

Being a beta-game tester means doing actual work; not just sitting there drinking cola and playing cool video games. You’ll not only have to play games you dislike again & again, you’re going to also have to fill out bug and glitch reports on those games too. If you’re not prepared to do this necessary evil, then you can NOT be a paid beta game tester.
