Creating Monsters – What to Do When Players Are Bored

October 13th, 2009

So I have a problem, my players are getting tired of the same ol’, same ol’ monsters. Every turn they sigh at the beasts that fumble towards them. So what to do to throw a curve ball?

Well create some new ones, that what I did. But where do you get the ideas for these new monsters? Answer: everywhere.

You know the long hair tribble of a dog down the street? Take that mut and combine it with something with more beef, say a tiger. Throw in something from the sea, like a squid. What you have now? A foaming at the mouth stripped dog with wicked claws and tentacles to lash out.

Now go a step further, if one won’t scare your players, just think what if these things hunt in packs of 20?

Here is a list that you can use to start out with your Frankenstein monsters:

wolf

lion

hippopotamus

horse

serval

giraffe

shark

octopus

whale

gecko

cobra

goat

bat

bear

ant

maggot

beetle

moth

elephant

Any book on animals can give you ideas. If you want something more random, make a list and list out numbers beside them to coincide with a dice roll. The possibilities are endless.

Also be sure to give them a personality and quirks to match, throw in something to throw your players off. Maybe you have a horse/lion beast that is mild mannered and flighty, but if it likes you it might kill you by licking you to death with its barbed tongue.

What Makes an Interesting Nonsense Game?

October 12th, 2009

We all play games at some time or other so what makes an interesting nonsense game to you?

Some people love the World of War Craft games and others like brain quizzes. Some people like playing naughts and crosses but this game is also known as ticktacktoe in some countries. Even discovering the different names for games in other countries can be considered a game if you do it purely as a bit of curiosity nonsense.

My brother likes to play brain games and puzzles but I don’t have the patience to sit and figure out maths puzzles that simply are quite beyond my meagre limitations. I love to play word puzzles and will sit for ages looking for and finding hidden words jumbled into crossword type puzzles. My sister-in-law she likes to play puzzles where you have to pull rings and things apart and get them back together again.

My son likes to play things like Rubik’s cube and will sit and fiddle for ages until he gets it out. If he has to go to the bathroom at all and puts it down and you pick it up to put it away somewhere safe he gets a ‘tad’ upset! These body interruptions are not acceptable or convenient apparently.

My step mum likes the good old fashioned cross word puzzles and will sit and wait happily anywhere so long as she has a crossword stashed somewhere in her voluminous handbag.

But one of my favourite games of all is on the internet when you get to play with digital stuff. It beats me how many of them work but they are the nonsense games that make me laugh

Check out this nonsense game NOW Because it is one word that packs a BIG Punch http://www.nonsensewebsite.com

The Dark Sun Campaign Guide Officially Announced

October 12th, 2009

Recently, at GenCon Indy 2009, Wizards of the Coast announced the next campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition. WotC announced that Dark Sun would be the next official campaign setting for 4th Edition. This announcement was to the delight of many fans, as Dark Sun was widely considered a fan-pleasing choice that offered new variety and a change of pace from the current fantasy settings offered for D&D 4e.

As stated, the world of Athas is very different from the stereotypical fantasy settings. Unlike Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Greyhawk, or the many other ‘traditional fantasy’ settings, Athas is a bleak desert wasteland set in a post-apocalyptic setting. Many players compare the Dark Sun setting to a ‘Dying Earth’ setting more than a fantasy setting.

One of the biggest differences in this setting is the lack of magic and the prominence of psionics. The world of Athas has been ravaged by magical backlash and destruction. Magic is primarily wielded only by a select few who typically dominate the land and are looked at negatively, for the most part. In place of magic, psionics has become of big part of society in the world of Athas. Psionics, rather than magic, is more common and accepted among the population.

The majority of the traditional fantasy races are represented in the Dark Sun setting. There are Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Half-Elves, and Halflings. In addition to these races, you also have certain races that are specific to the Dark Sun setting, as well as races available for player character that are not typically available in other fantasy-based games. There are Half-Giants, which are typically only ‘monster’ creatures and not often available for play as a player character race. There is also Thri-Kreen, which are a race of Mantis men. And there are Muls, which are a half dwarf and half human hybrid.

The classes in Dark Sun vary from other settings as well. There aren’t too many true equivalents to Sorcerers, Monks, or Paladins in the game. Most spell casters are divided into two different sides, Defilers or Preservers. The ‘Priests’ in Athas don’t worship deities in the traditional sense. They derive their power from other available sources in the world.

If you are looking to get some reading in about Dark Sun before the campaign guide comes out, there are three different book series that will help you. The first series is the Tribe of One by Simon Hawke. It is a three book series which make a great starter series about the setting. There is also the Chronicles of Athas, which is a five book series by multiple authors. It provides several different writing styles in one series. And finally the Prism Pentad by Troy Denning is a five book series. This series was the first to come out in the early 90’s and will most likely be republished prior to the Dark Sun Campaign Guide’s release.

The Dark Sun setting is a great choice by Wizards of the Coast for their next campaign setting. It is something that the fans asked for and it makes perfect sense for Wizards of the Coast as a company. The world is unique and a welcomed change from the traditional fantasy settings that are available currently. The Dark Sun Campaign Guide will be released in 2010 for the Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition rule set.

Aion Release Imminent

October 12th, 2009

I like many others enjoy playing MMO. But as with so many games unless new content is continually being added they soon become the same old grind.

Having played World of Warcraft since its launch even this game is starting to slowly loose its appeal, sad but true.

That’s why when I heard that there is to be a release of a new MMO to hit the market on the 25th September 2009, it sparked my interest, and it’s name is Aion.. For anyone out there who is not familiar with Aion it is set in the Fantasy world of Atriea.

Having looked at a couple of reviews this could be the game of 2009. Although there seems to be a lot of the usual things within Aion, the sort of traits you would expect to find in most MMO’s, like crafting, character customisation, titles, in game rewards, but Aion does promise to bring some new facets to the table, such as aerial combat. Can’t wait to give that a bash.

Now I can not claim how good this game is, as I have yet to give it a spin, but from the hype around its launch it could breathe some new life into the MMO market. Oh incidentally the graphics Aion look stunning

So if your looking for a change of online game and something a little different then give Aion Tower of Eternity a go.

So until the 25th guess I will just have to wait patiently. If you want more info take a look at Aion-Release some good info on what to expect.

To the skies we fight !!! Well on the 25th we will.

Top 3 Reasons to Become a Game Tester

October 12th, 2009

If your dream is to have a nice income by playing video games, you can turn that dream into a reality by becoming a game tester.

Make Money by Testing Games

October 9th, 2009

Do you know that you can make money by testing games that have not yet been released to the market? The video and computer game industry has become a very lucrative business that amounts to more than $60 billion in sales per year. Those who are interested in playing video games could also make some profit by working as game testers.

Game companies are looking for gamers who can test their new products before their release to prevent customers’ dissatisfaction with the games if there are any bugs. This situation could result in a loss of millions of dollars and may even damage the company’s reputation. Thus, they are willing to pay gamers to check the games first, and have the chance to weed out those flaws.

In return, game testers are paid about $30 per hour to test the games. They can even work part-time and they can choose their own work schedules. Additionally, the job does not even require them to have any kind of work experience or a certain educational background. All they need is a passion for playing games, and they could be earning some money playing video or computer games.

An important requirement, however, is that you should be willing to record the various details of when and how a certain bug in the program occurred. These glitches could prevent some people from fully enjoying the game. In addition, you may not like a job where you have to keep playing a certain part of a game just to test whether the bug that you have discovered has been completely repaired.

Overall, the job of a game tester is a profitable one. Where else could you find a job where you are paid just to play games when in most companies, the playing of games is strictly prohibited?

Visit GamesTester.Org for your BEST chance at progressing as a games tester. Also check out this Mage Leveling Guide and level from 1 to 80 in less than a week!

3 Reasons a Video Gaming Chair May Be For You!

October 9th, 2009

More and more people today are investing their money into a video gaming chair at a fast rate because of the many benefits they offer. It makes it better than from sitting on the hard ground and playing video games. For the average gamer, spending that much time on the ground can lead to serious problems if not corrected. That is why the video gaming chair has become so popular. The basic operations of a video gaming chair are:

1. Use it with almost any console – Whether your system is an X-Box or a PS3, you can connect it to the video gaming chair and have hours of fun. For those who just want to listen to music or watch a movie, the video gaming chair that you choose will allow you to plug in and enjoy that favorite CD or DVD. Whatever you choose, you are guaranteed to have a good time in the chair.

2. Surround sound speakers – You get the full experience when you are in the video gaming chair. With the option to plug into the surround sound system that is built into the chair, you have the opportunity to hear jets flying over your head or that gunfire just missing you. That is the beauty of the chair’s surround sound system located next to your ears.

3. Compact for storage – When you have finished enjoying the chair, you can easily put it away for easy storage. The chair is compact to begin with and doesn’t take a lot of room either, but to make it more convenient, it leans up easily for simple storage. Everyone likes it when things pack away easy without having to hassle with how it stores.

When you get the home with you, you are going to have a better experience when you play games or watch movies. For those who haven’t experienced surround sound before, you are going to be in for a treat. There are other options such as a volume control that lets you minimize the fun you get. Not everyone can handle having loud sounds in their ears. There has to be a happy medium for some. Whatever you choose, the video gaming chair is the best for any avid gamer.

If you don’t have one already now might just be the time to invest in that video gaming chair. With the advancements in technology in the game consoles, a superb video gaming chair may be just what you need to take your experience to the next level.

Video Game Jobs – Companies Hiring Workers Now For Video Game Jobs

October 9th, 2009

One of the key steps step towards getting hired for video game jobs involves determining who it is you would like to work for. A big factor in determining this choice will be your own preference of gaming platform, as well as gaming experience. Are you more into online role-playing games, or are you a big Xbox fan? Strategy games, or sports games? Narrowing down what you are most familiar with and enjoy playing will help immensely in determining who you would enjoy working for.

The four biggest employers in the video game industry are of course Microsoft (Xbox), Sony (PlayStation), and Nintendo (Wii), and for the PC, Electronic Arts. Yet it would be a mistake to only consider these four companies as your only options. There are numerous small and medium-sized companies that create numerous video game jobs, both temporary and permanent. Preparing to apply to the dozens of other game development companies for video game jobs will enable you to expand and diversify your list of possible employers, and your chances of getting hired will increase tremendously.

For this reason, it is also very important to acquire knowledge and experience on multiple gaming hardware platforms. While to be sure, there are numerous video game jobs available for specific platforms (Xbox, Wii, Playstation, PC), at the very least, in addition to one or more of those platforms, one should have experience using the PC as a gaming platform. Furthermore, online gaming experience is an additional advantage, especially the massive online role playing games (MMPORGs). Even in the recession, online video games continue to expand in usage and popularity.

There are many other companies you should research and consider working for; to name just a few, consider the following 25 companies, mast of whom have video game jobs open even now:

Who Are the Best Video Game Icons?

October 9th, 2009

Videogames culture has never yet made a household name of it’s designers, producers or Directors. A famous name is justified by some genuinely game defining work. The list of these industry players is endless but the limelight always goes to the character that has been created in the video game.

Console game designers have changed the actual characters over time. This is done with advancing technology. What is good is that the designers have aimed to preserve the iconography while making the stars of their games more three -dimensional. Who is your favorite game icon? How many of these can you remember?

Pac-man 1980 Once king of the arcade and originally called Puck man. A yellow munching machine that looked like a Pizza with a missing slice.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1991 The spiky blue mascot has been almost prolific as his rival Mario. Sonic was all about one thing, Speed.

Lara Croft 2001 England’s favorite pistol firing treasure hunter. The top heavy original was later turned into an elegantly athletic model.

Pikachu 1998 The most famous of all Pokemon. The super fast mascot is still catchable in Pokemon games and has been spotted in other video games.

Console makers are also associated by Mascot characters. Nintendo has Mario who has starred in well over a hundred games. His first appearance was in the platform game Donkey Kong in 1980. PlayStation, Xbox, Gamecube, Gameboy, Wii, and DS, they all have their favorite character

As long as new console games are being invented, more iconic characters will appear. Enjoy your gaming.

My name is Peter and I believe that buying console games online from sites like http://www.ultimatevideogames.co.uk is quick, easy and enjoyable.
