You Can’t Make an Imperfect Decision

October 19th, 2009

I am where I am because I made the perfect decision to get me here. I am not a victim. The negative consequences as well as the positive ones are the result of absolute perfection.

In his book, THE HEART OF THE SOUL, Gary Zukav has a chapter entitled “Perfectionism.” Most thought-provoking is his belief that every decision in life yields a perfect consequence. He says that the whole principle behind perfectionism is that something is not perfect and we have to correct it. But he believes we cannot make an imperfect decision.

According to Mr. Zukav, our actions are perfect. If I find myself alone and isolated from others, I made the perfect choices to encourage this state. Zukav says “all choices create perfect consequences. Some choices create consequences that are more destructive than consequences created by other choices. Some choices create consequences that are more nurturing.” He continues, “a choice to exploit another person cannot create a bond of respect and appreciation. It can create only violence and destruction.” When I consider this, I realize that I am where I am in my life because I made the perfect decisions to help me arrive here.

I can remember my teen years and my 20s. If I wanted someone to pay attention to me, I would do things in an effort to get the person to give me attention. At the time, I didn’t understand that my actions were due to my own feelings of insecurity. Hence, I resorted to manipulation and control tactics to get what I wanted. Funny thing though, the attention was short-lived and I’d ultimately end up alone and feeling even more insecure.

What about the innocent children who are born in grossly dysfunctional families? Or even more bewildering, what about those who had great childhoods yet find themselves in negative situations? Or what about things beyond our control like the untimely death of a spouse? I asked these questions as I read. But the more I read, it dawned on me that Mr. Zukav was not ascribing guilt or saying that we are at fault. He argues that we are not victims. We are powerful. Even if that power is misguided, it doesn’t make us any less powerful. Therefore, our efforts are wasted when we spend time trying to make ourselves perfect or make others perfect.

Life is a journey. Regardless to whether I am prepared or not prepared, know where I’m going or don’t have a clue, choose to take my chances or have a road map, Hwy 40 is Hwy 40. And if I get on that highway and stay on that highway, I’ll arrive exactly where that highway takes me. The highway doesn’t discriminate.

This might sound like bad news, but I see it as quite empowering. If I am on a highway that I don’t wish to be on or I’ve arrived someplace where I don’t wish to stay, I have choices. I can choose to look back over my journey and only grieve over it or I can find where I took the wrong exit or made the wrong turn. I can continue to take exits out of fear and frustration, or I can choose to ask for help from someone who knows the path and can tell me how to get on the right highway.

I can choose to be impatient with myself or I can choose to be understanding. I didn’t get here overnight and I won’t get out of here overnight. It’ll take time and commitment. If the truth be told, most times we have to drive right back down that wrong road before we’ll get back to the exit to get back on the right highway. But this time, we’ll be traveling in the OPPOSITE direction.

My life coach said to me, “where you are right now is a gift.” It is perfect. It is the perfect opportunity for you to learn more about yourself, finish what’s not finished and have what you want for your life.

How to Break Bad News in 4 Easy Steps

October 19th, 2009

It’s never easy being the bearer of bad news. Wouldn’t you like to stay out of the whole loop until everything blows over? Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, you have to be the one to say it. However, there are ways you can soften the blow. This article shows you how to break bad news to people you care for.

You must be wondering how that is possible. Well, think of it this way: If you don’t know how to break bad news, the situation could get worse. A lot worse. So if you want to avoid that situation, read on!

Step 1: Timing Is Everything.

This is about gauging the perfect time to deliver unfortunate news. For example, don’t tell your sister that you lost her favorite ring when you two are in the middle of a fight. Don’t tell your parents that you dropped out of college as soon as they get home from work. Instead, pick a time when the person you’re breaking the bad news to is most willing to listen and not freak out.

Step 2: Put It In Context.

People get upset when they receive terrible news. However, they somehow feel better when they realize that they could have had it worse.

One of the best ways on how to break bad news is by putting the message in context. Let’s say you have to tell some people that their house got robbed while they were away on vacation. That could certainly make anyone go into panic mode.

However, if you tell them that they were lucky to have not been there at all since the thieves were known to be ruthless, then they’ll have a more positive perspective on the situation.

Step 3: Lessen The Emotional Intensity.

As much as possible, learn how to break bad news in a way that lessens its negative emotional intensity. That means no crying fits or no hiccupping. Try not to show any sign of sorrow or pain in your face that the recipient might pick up on, as this could aggravate the situation.

Step 4: Allow Them To React.

Knowing how to break bad news means allowing them to react. Don’t react for them or before them. Instead, base your reactions on what they do next. If the person you’re talking to cries, then comfort them. If the person is angry, try to calm them down a little.

Now that you know how to break bad news, it might still feel unpleasant when you do it, and you might sometimes even be dragged into the mess. But you can at least rest easy knowing that in some way, you help lighten the other person’s load.

The Only Way to Hire a Contractor – Never Get Three Free Estimates

October 15th, 2009

Basically most people including contractors are fair and honest. They want to perform a service for you and get paid so they can provide for their family just as you need to provide for yours. Why everybody assumes and implies that contractors in general are swindlers simply isn’t fair or correct. You may hear on the news that a homeowner lost a substantial amount of money from a corrupt contractor. What you don’t hear about is the other thousands of contractors providing good quality work on a daily basis.

The advice of getting three estimates for every job is bad advice. What most people will do when they get three estimates is to naturally choose the lowest bid. People are like electricity, they follow the path of least resistance. A few are enlightened and will choose the average bid, versus the highest or the lowest. But either way, having three contractors come do a free estimate for you leads to bad service for everybody.

A contractors time is very valuable just as yours is. Now when you get an estimate and inform this contractor that you are going to get three bids, you are implying that his ethics may be lacking, which isn’t very nice. You have also put a lot of pressure on him because he needs the work to feed his family and keep his employees working. Naturally he is going to give you the lowest bid he can to ensure he gets the job. In turn the other two contractors that follow him are going to need the job also. So depending on how desperate they are for work will depend how low they will bid to get this job. This constant form of playing cutthroat with their competitors leads them to underbid jobs just so they have work.

After they lose money on a job they are even more desperate to get the next job. What this does is leads contractors into financial problems and it leads to bad service, not being able to do the job correctly with a lot of stress for them. This can cause even a man with the sturdiest ethics to lose his footing. He will want to perform a quality job as agreed but when he doesn’t have any money to pay his employees or to buy materials he simply can’t do it.

If everybody always has three free estimates performed then it takes the contractors away from supervising their employees on your job site. You made a contract with him, and he is whom you will want to communicate with during the job. If he is off giving free estimates and not able to watch his employees, the quality of the job may suffer. In addition if an employee gets hurt, a water pipe breaks, or they run out of supplies, the job will stop right there. All in all, insisting on three estimates does everybody a disservice and leads to unhappy people, including you.

Somehow people get the idea that contractors make a lot of money. I was a contractor and I know that is not correct. It is a very competitive business and it isn’t hard to lose a substantial amount of money very quickly. The average "free" estimates takes an hour or two considering drive time just to look over the job. It then takes another hour or two to type up these details and deliver it. The costs of these materials are constantly changing. Contractors other many expenses include gas and clothes that get ruined on almost every job. It is a very dangerous and stressful job, always concerned about the safety of their employees. Why nobody wants to pay these hardworking men a fair wage is almost criminal.

The best way to hire a contractor is via word of mouth. If you need some work done and you see a contractors sign in a yard, stop and talk to him. Look at his project, the safety measures, his employees, the quality of his tools and the quality of his work. Talk to the owner and see if he is pleased with the work. Call the Better Business Bureau and ask about this contractor. The BBB can be circumvented because they register contractors by their phone number. With cell phones, unethical contractors can change their business name, get a new cell phone number and place a new ad in the newspaper. So check to see if their phone number is a home phone number or a cell phone. It is always better to locate a contractor in the phone book, if you don’t go by word of mouth.

Once you have located a contractor that you deem does the quality work you want done, ask for an estimate. Tell him you would like the estimate to be itemized with the materials and labor separate. A good rule of thumb for estimates is that the labor will be double the amount of materials. A smaller job will be more for labor.

When he brings a contract ask him to also bring his insurance binder that certifies he has current liability insurance. If he requires a down payment inform him that you would prefer to make the first payment after a fair amount of work has been done. If he has a problem with that and indicates any sign of financial trouble you may want to rethink your choice. Before you sign the contract get a verbal or written agreement from him that he will be on site during the job.

If you take these steps your experience with a contractor will be pleasant. Do your part and recommend the good contractor to your friends. Never get three free estimates. This same advice to protect you against consumer fraud is the cause of the problem.

Easy Repairs For Increased Home Value

October 15th, 2009

There is a saying that prevention is better than cure. The same goes for your house. You could make your house in better shape and top value when you regularly perform simple repairs. When you do so, you would also save money, as some repairs would not even cost a thing. Making your home free from frequent damages would surely increase the value of your home. Especially if you are contemplating to sell your house, fixing repairs right away would prove to be beneficial for you.

In looking for areas in your house that might need simple repairs, you have to check indoors and outdoors. You may need to do inspection first in the interiors as these areas are where you most likely spend most of your time. Indoor repairs may include lighting fixtures, shelves and cabinets, bathroom sink and tub leaks, faucet leaks, broken tiles, painted and/or carpeted surfaces that start to peel or chip off, non-functional switches and bulbs, or just about every inch inside your house. As for the outdoors, you should look out for damaged patches of grass, broken fences, peeling off paints, and other outdoor features of your house.

Here are more specific areas that you and your family could easily repair: loose switches, loose hinges of windows, doors, cabinets and cupboards, damaged locks, rusty rods and other materials made of metal steel, cracks and holes, and a whole lot more. You could either do it alone or ask assistance from family members or friends.

As said above, there are some repairs that would not need any dishing out any cash. These cost-free repairs may include regular cleaning, dusting, and throwing out unnecessary equipment, materials or just any old stuff you no longer use. In cleaning and dusting, you may even make it as a weekend activity with the whole family. This way, when you keep your whole house spic and span, there are higher chances that you could regularly inspect which areas needs replacements. In clearing out your clutter, some of the things that are still usable, you may even organize a garage sale so you could earn some more money.

The repairs could be done through minimal replacements. Light bulbs, nails, screws, buckets of paint are some of the most common materials needed when you need to change some things in your house. Keep in mind when you are replacing materials, opt for the energy-efficient and cost-effective ones. So you do not have to frequently change anything. In addition, while making your home in a better condition, you even help the environment.

In doing home repairs, you should have confidence in yourself. The small repairs do not need much effort. But if you still are not sure with exactly what to do, you could look for self-help do’s and don’ts. There are several do-it-yourself kits, videos and articles that you could use. You could search the Internet when you need some guides. For example, you could look for articles that offer simple tips in repainting walls, patching gaps, super gluing, smoothening pavements, or anything else. You could also ask advice from friends and relatives. They might even help you in repairing some stuff in your home.

So, with these areas that need simple repairs enumerated, you should always keep in mind that despite some expenses, you are doing these to improve your home. You and your family could then be prouder of your abode more than ever.

The Thoughtfulness in Thinking

October 13th, 2009

To be a successful adult requires the ability to think and plan strategically. The quality of your thoughtfulness, i.e., the careful concern for the resulting consequences of each decision and action, may be the single most important skill of an effective leader. This skill does not materialize all by itself and you’re not able to learn it from a book or even a college course. This is one of those life skills that must be learned by doing.

What does learning to be a thoughtful thinker look like? It looks exactly like a mistake in judgment. When you’ve made a decision and something goes awry you’ve learned to think a bit farther ahead of the immediate outcome next time. With each subsequent mistake in judgment, you learn to think even farther until one day you’ve mastered the skill of thoughtful strategic thinking.

All big life lessons should be learned and practiced early in life while mistakes don’t count too much. For thoughtful thinking it is especially true. The mistakes in judgment for a child can be as simple as putting off math homework until the last minute only to find that you need materials from the library which is now closed. A ten year old will learn to think a bit farther out next time to ensure he/she will have access to the resources needed. For a teenager, the mistakes in judgment can count much more so it’s best not to wait the lesson. Their earlier practice in thoughtful strategic thinking will help immensely when faced with many tough decisions, such as deciding whether to ride in a car with a person who has been drinking. Because they had the opportunity to practice and master thoughtful thinking early, their unconscious competence now will feel like second nature. They won’t have to actually make the mistake of riding in that car because they automatically think ahead.

Give your children the opportunity to practice this skill. Welcome and praise their mistakes now as a way to proactively approach for preparing their successful futures. Don’t wait until the price for learning is too high.

Lorraine Esposito is the author of “The Morning Peacemaker, How to get your kids out the door on time without saying (nagging) a word.” Teaching children accountability with training wheels and zipped lips.

Want to Be Considered “Quick-Witted”? Look For Natural Pairs

October 13th, 2009

According to Lee Iacocca, the best thing you can do for your career is learn to think on your feet. There are numerous ways to acquire or polish this skill. One of the best is to think of and then incorporate two words that naturally go together.

HUSBAND….AND WIFE
When we are stressed, our brains simply don’t function as well as they normally do. But there are ways to appear verbally poised when under pressure. Take the example of Judy, a stay-at-home mom until her daughter reached school-age. Then Judy studied for and obtained a realtor’s license. Armed with the certificate and a well-structured business plan, she made an appointment with the loan officer at a local bank. During the meeting, he listened attentively as Judy laid out her plans.

Finally, he spoke: “Does your husband know you’re doing this?” he wanted to know.

Judy asked a question of her own: “Does your wife know you’re asking questions like that?” As he stuttered and sputtered his way though a reply, Judy packed up her papers and took her business elsewhere. The officer is still approving (or “dis”approving) loans. Judy, however, has moved on. Today, she is a multi-millionaire.

The trick she used was to listen for a word in the sentence someone just spoke (“husband”) and to give your reply using a related word (“wife”). With some practice and some intent listening, you can do as well as our heroine.

LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS
Her actions help us to understand the words of poet Kahlil Gibran: “I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers.”

Know When to Retain a Professional For Home Improvement Projects

October 13th, 2009

David and Amy were ecstatic when they found out the sellers had accepted their offer on the charming little Cape Cod house they wanted to buy. The neighborhood was so exceptionally maintained and was close to shopping, jobs, and transportation. The sellers were older folks who had been vigilant regarding major repairs such as a new roof and furnace but at the same time, they had been very frugal when redecorating just for the sake of bringing things up to date.

Although the house was going to need some work to reach its potential, David and Amy were confident that any improvement would only add to the value of the home and they were looking forward to spending weekends fixing it up cosmetically. A few cans of paint, some new cabinet facings and shiny new stainless steel kitchen appliances and they were looking at a very presentable first floor. The hardwood floors gleamed with just a very thorough cleaning and the built in dining room corner china closets were stunning.

As they weighed their options at freshening up the unfinished upper floor, they quickly decided that carpet tile was a very affordable option and one that would not only create a great look but also would allow David the opportunity of making it a do it yourself carpet project.

This story brings up a very important consideration that we all must make at one time or another and that is when is it appropriate to hire a professional installer or an experienced handyman? While each situation is unique, here are a few tips that the job required is best left to a professional.

2012 – The Eve of Destruction?

October 12th, 2009

Many predict that the end of the world will come in the year 2012. There is a growing frenzy to “get on board” and clean up your act or you will miss the boat. Although we cannot say what the future will hold, we can tell you that never in history has there been the need to “hurry” to do anything. What is more important is to be in joy and express love each and every moment. This entails releasing fears and habits that keep you from enjoying a passionate and compassionate life.

Learn how to maintain a state of calm and peace no matter what storm is brewing around you. Have courage to stand in your truth, no matter who may disagree with what you say or do. Take time each day to go within, quiet your mind and set clear intentions for what you wish to accomplish. Pay attention to what is happening around you, especially in nature and be respectful to all beings who reside on the earth. Fill your heart with gratitude each moment, reveling in the beauty that surrounds you.

Learn to live in the moment and make the journey memorable. Stop and smell the roses and be kind to those you encounter along the way. So many things people pray to experience become missed opportunities because they are overly focused on getting from point A to point B.

Some may argue that there is a need to hurry because the world is falling apart, that it is on the eve of destruction. What we would say in response is that if each of us would stop in this moment and make the decision to be kind and respectful to others and to share our wealth, in an instant the world would become the utopia so many dream of. In the twinkling of an eye, world hunger would be resolved; we already have enough food to feed all.

All wars could cease in the moment government leaders learned how to communicate and be respectful of others. It is the need to control others and take their property and resources that feeds the war machine.

Teach children how to turn off the TV and their electronic games. Let them explore and re-learn how to play outside with tools and games nature supplies freely such as sticks and stones. This simple thing will not only increase their ability to solve problems, but will also alleviate a huge portion of the ecological problems created by the plastics corporations.

Watch drug companies collapse when stresses caused by toxic food, unresolved problems, poor communication and fear decreases. If in one moment every person resolved to live in their truth, remaining in joy with the courage to take responsibility for their actions, thus allowing creative juices to flow, there would be no need for drugs, illegal or prescribed.

An exorbitant amount of money is spent on medical research, insurance, surgeries and mental health. For years, scientists such as Rife and Tesla have provided cures for all ailments. There are now many volumes available demonstrating the correlation between dis-ease and “stinking thinking.” It is common sense to know that the use of herbicides and pesticides on our food and water sources can only result in toxicity in our bodies.

Are you aware that for each step involving the processing of food, the more contaminated it us? The longer it takes to go from garden to mouth, the less nutrients there are. Have you taken time to research the heinous crimes perpetrated against animals destined to be your next meal? We are eating dead food full of toxic substances and wonder why there is such a rise in cancers, ADD and other diseases and disorders.

Why are we not harnessing the power of the sun, wind and water more? Why do we still power engines with earth’s natural resources, creating imbalances in nature? It is greed that generates many governmental programs and disallows the use of ecologically balanced technologies.

If you feel the need to “hurry,” we suggest your quickening be focused “inside” rather that upward. Take time to look at how you can be part of the soul-ution when it comes to creating heaven on earth.

We have allowed our representative leaders to gain much control over our lives. Now is the time to become responsible and reclaim self-empowerment. Move past the walls of fear that you have created as invisible shields of protection. It is not through isolation that we will create a utopian society; it is through teamwork based on love. Let us work together, releasing fears of impending doom and focus on each moment, striving towards living a life based on love, rather than fear.

Choosing Our Moods

October 12th, 2009

First question(s): What kind of mood are you in as you read this article? Relaxed? Bored? Grateful? Frustrated? Rushed? Sad? Hopeful? Something else?

Second question: Did you choose your current mood, or did it just come upon you?

If we believe that our mood is “just the mood” that we’re in at the moment, then the mood is in charge of many things, yes? How we see others; how we treat others; how we respond to situations; how we treat ourselves; the words we choose; the decisions we make throughout the day and what we believe about ourselves.

Isn’t it great when we’re in a good mood? Everybody’s nicer. We’re nicer. We’re happier (and healthier, and funnier and more attractive and…). The sun is brighter and the tailgater on the freeway is “probably just in a rush and let’s hope for her safety” 

But when we’re in a bad mood, oh boy! The world is not a place of peace. We look for everything and anything to solidify our notion that “things are pretty screwed up.” The job is going nowhere. The economy will never come back. My kids are constantly asking for more, more, more. And what an idiot that guy is, driving so close behind me…I can’t wait ’til this day’s over.

Just my words and examples…hopefully you get the spirit of my assertion that we, sometimes, are in receivership of our moods.

But what if we changed the picture. What if we made the decision to choose the mood we wished to be in? That, in fact, our moods were the outcomes of our conscious choices. That, in my mind, would be true personal mastery.

Making the conscious choice to change the mood we’re in is a form of self-efficacy (the belief that we can accomplish something). In so doing, we empower ourselves to feel the way we wish to feel. Feelings of hurt, anger sorrow and disappointment are natural consequences of life. I, in no way, suggest that these things be repressed, cast aside or expedited before running their due course. What I am suggesting is that our ability as human beings to cultivate a feeling we so desire is not only within our emotional, psychological and spiritual DNA, but also our responsibility to ourselves in relief of the negativity that can permeate our days.

When we CHOOSE…
