History of horse racing in Great Britain will take us back around 200 AD during the Roman Empire in Yorkshire which was organized by the Roman soldiers. However, it was recorded that a race meeting was conducted during the reign of Henry II at Smithfield, London during 1174.
In 1512, the first trophy was presented to the winners of a race by organizers of a fair in Chester. It was a small wooden ball decorated with flowers.
During the reign of Henry VIII in the early 16th century, a large number of stallions and mares were imported but it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that breeding of thoroughbreds began.
