If you have not tried it then trust me when I tell you that golf is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable sports you could possibly choose. You get the opportunity to relax and play in the company of friends while relishing the sunshine and wondering at the beauty of Mother Nature in all her glory.
There is a problem. Although golf may look easy, as any seasoned player will tell you, it is not quite as easy as it looks and nearly all beginners take a considerable time to get to grips with even the basics of the game.
In spite of the fact that golf is quite rightly classed as being a sport it is very different from the majority of the other sports which we ordinarily all play or watch. Take, for example, a sport such as football. Here the game is mostly physical in nature and your role as a player is very much to respond to whatever is going on around you, often with a great deal of physical effort. Of course there is a degree of mental activity involved in a game of football, but your main focus of attention is very much on utilizing your physical skill and strength.
However, golf is one game in which, while you are competing against other people, you are also competing against yourself and, more importantly, it is a game where you are in total control over the action. You tee up your ball but after that absolutely nothing is going to happen until you make it happen. In this instance you are not reacting to whatever is happening around you but are making all of the play yourself.
This is an extremely great difference as it means that the game of golf involves a degree of focus and level of concentration as you control everything in your game and this is simply something which you do not find in other sports.
Golf is difficult to master because in addition to getting to grips with the physical aspects of the game like the mechanics of the golf swing, you must also learn how to create the state of relaxed concentration necessary to control that swing in the correct manner to achieve the shot you wish for.
