So I have a problem, my players are getting tired of the same ol’, same ol’ monsters. Every turn they sigh at the beasts that fumble towards them. So what to do to throw a curve ball?
Well create some new ones, that what I did. But where do you get the ideas for these new monsters? Answer: everywhere.
You know the long hair tribble of a dog down the street? Take that mut and combine it with something with more beef, say a tiger. Throw in something from the sea, like a squid. What you have now? A foaming at the mouth stripped dog with wicked claws and tentacles to lash out.
Now go a step further, if one won’t scare your players, just think what if these things hunt in packs of 20?
Here is a list that you can use to start out with your Frankenstein monsters:
wolf
lion
hippopotamus
horse
serval
giraffe
shark
octopus
whale
gecko
cobra
goat
bat
bear
ant
maggot
beetle
moth
elephant
Any book on animals can give you ideas. If you want something more random, make a list and list out numbers beside them to coincide with a dice roll. The possibilities are endless.
Also be sure to give them a personality and quirks to match, throw in something to throw your players off. Maybe you have a horse/lion beast that is mild mannered and flighty, but if it likes you it might kill you by licking you to death with its barbed tongue.
